Old Rif Pottery 15-25

These special pots are from the northern part of Morocco, the Rif mountains. This pottery was made by women from clay they collect on the hills near their villages. They are all natural. They were made for their personal use and not for a commercial purpose. Since they didn’t have refrigeration, these clay urns were used to store and preserve multiple food items. They used them for “s’man” which is salted butter,  olive oil, “Khlii” which is cured meat as well as other food related items.

Such jars have been collectible items for centuries for their natural beauty, their patina that continues to change over time and their ability to stand time. They are timeless pieces that can survive for hundreds of years when cared for. They also provide a metaphor for life and existence.
